Hannibal-LaGrange University has a big heart for service as a means of giving back and sharing the love of Christ in a tangible way. Community service opportunities range from weekly to annual events and involve a large number of students, faculty, and staff. Every fall the new students team up with faculty and alumni to serve the greater Hannibal area in an event well-named “Hannibal Helping Hands.” This free-of-cost event alone enlists over 300 people to serve in approximately 20 locations (both religious and secular). Some of these include the Parks and Rec, Humane Society, American Red Cross, C.H.A.R.T. Teen Task Force, YMCA, Douglass Community Center, Hannibal Public Library, Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, and AVENUES.
Other opportunities available include “Rake and Run,” Retirement Center Ministry, and assisting at local recycling centers. “Rake and Run” takes place on a Saturday morning in November where students go out and rake neighbors’ yards free of charge. Opportunities include, but are certainly not limited to, these and more.

Disciple Now Weekends
Participating in D-Now weekends is one way HLGU students love to get involved and build relationships with teens in surrounding area churches. Churches usually supply their own material in advance, and our students will prepare to lead discussion before arrival. Typically a Friday evening through Sunday morning, the college students spend their weekend leading small groups, answering questions, playing sports, leading worship if requested, and most of all loving on the junior high and high school students while seeking to point them to Jesus. Bonds between these students can continue to grow long after this short, but valuable, time and provide a means for discipleship.
